Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Netbooks, Gadgets / Other

PC World writer, Galen Gruman, called out iPad pre-order buyers on Saturday, calling them names in his post, “iPad Pre-Orders: For Idiots Only.” Apple’s iPad went on pre-order Friday and is rumored to have 120,000 devices sold as a result. Even at the cheapest model, that’s $60 million, not a bad day in my book.

Gruman puts forth a logical argument,

“... we’ve all seen promising product demonstrations that resulted in major letdown when we finally got a hold of the real thing. Why take that chance? After all, the first-generation iPad is particularly likely to have disappointments, as it’s the version that will tell us what, after the hoopla dies down, Apple should have done.”

We all know that first generation anything, typically has some bugs to work out: cars, appliances, and especially gadgets. Gruman seems content to call the cult-like followers of the golden fruit names while forgetting (or perhaps counting on for page hits) other motivations for buying. Fear not, the “idiots” responded to the post:

“And if I call someone an idiot, my post gets flagged for personal attacks . . . but this guy can call a whole slew of people idiots, IN THE TOPIC EVEN!!!”
“aren’t you the same guy who was raving about the iPad just last month?”
“PC World used to have much better tech journalism than this. Are they hiring high school kids to write their op-eds during the recession now?”
“According to the logic of this article, I should cancel my subscription to PC World on the grounds that I would be an “idiot” to order an issue of a magazine before I’d actually had the opportunity to review it.”
“Galen, please stop writing. Your boorish, self pleasuring drivel has tainted a rather noble profession.”
“Galen Gruman is a prick.”
“I won’t defend my decision to purchase the iPad because your clearly not capable of understanding. Go FYS “

As of this writing, there were 139 comments, mostly voiced by folks that sounded as if either they pre-ordered the iPad or can find logic in doing so. There were a few, “take that Apple fanboys” but most were put off by Gruman’s name calling. The tone was angry, disappointed in PC World, and often insulted.

I wonder how the post would have compared if the author had titled it, “iPad Pre-Orders, Your’re an idiot if you didn’t get one”. Would the Microsoft legion have come out against the fanboy? How many times would the word “fanboy” or “fanboi” have been in the comments? Or “Kool Aid”? Let us know in the comments.

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Laptops

According to the rumor mill, the clamshell styled Viliv N5 is going to be available for purchase as of this May. According to the details, which come courtesy of Pocketables, “the plan right now is to release the Viliv N5 in May.” In other words, nothing official has been announced as of yet.

In terms of the Viliv N5 and what it has to offer. Well, feature wise it has a 4.8-inch WSVGA touchscreen display, a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD and is running Windows 7. Additionally, due to the clamshell design, the N5 also comes sporting a QWERTY keyboard, albeit a small QWERTY keyboard.

Honestly I am not sure about these style of devices, I was able to mess around with the N5 during CES for a few minutes and for me the small keyboard is a device killer. I am in the mind set that if the keyboard is not large enough to touch-type is is not as useful. Personally on a device with a 4.8-inch display I would feel better served by a virtual keyboard, or the ability to pair it with a full-sized Bluetooth keyboard for the occasional typing. That said, my personal feelings regarding the keyboard aside, the Viliv N5 appeared to be a very nice device when I was able to check it out.

JooJoo passes through FCC with Nvidia Ion

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers

The JooJoo, while not the iPad, is potentially one of the most interesting tablets, if only for the story behind the device. When it was the CrunchPad, it was often accused of being vaporware, and now as the JooJoo it has a lot of that to overcome. Today, however, the tablet is one step closer to being released in the US.

The JooJoo has passed through the FCC, bringing a future release closer. That in itself is good to hear, but the specs of the JooJoo are actually a bit exciting. There should be no surprise that the tablet is running the Intel Atom CPU (N270 to be specific), the good part comes in the graphics. It looks as if the JooJoo will feature the Nvidia Ion GPU, potentially even the second generation which should ship within the next few weeks. This is why the JooJoo will be able to handle HD video with no problem, though it will likely not be great for the battery life.

The FCC’s JooJoo looks to be running Windows, and not the new-and-improved UI, though that’s likely just for testing. Why anyone would want to install a desktop OS on a tablet is questionable, though its nice to know the option is there. Fusion Garage needs to do something to make the JooJoo appeal to some people over the iPad, and perhaps that’s one way to go about it.

At 8:30 this morning, Apple is expected to give the iPad an advantage the iPhone never saw, pre-order. In fact, the Apple Store is down right now. By allowing pre-orders, is Apple cashing in on the buzz or setting itself up for failure?

Apple is taking pre-orders for iPads, their “magical” tablet computer based on the iPhone OS, that will ship on April 3rd, launch day. Customers can also choose to pick up their pre-order at the Apple Retail Stores on launch day. Only the Wi-Fi versions will be available on April 3rd, the 3G versions will follow in late April, according to Apple.

The buzz is still pretty loud for the iPad. By allowing pre-orders, Apple could be grabbing cash from hopeful users before they can be tempted by other tablets like the JooJoo. iPad posts do well here at Gadgetell, and that is a pretty good gauge of how much people like this thing, but is pre-order the way to go?

Or is Apple hurting themselves by limiting the all the “line forms outside Apple Retail Stores” free media coverage as fans take to the streets to get their hands on Apple’s new shiny thing? One of the most memorable parts of the original iPhone launch is the image of folks lining up around the country. Sure you saw it here at Gadgetell, but traditional media like your local news also jumped on giving Apple loads of coverage. With pre-orders, there should be less folks in the street; and fewer people mean less interesting coverage.

Does Apple have doubts on the success of this one? Why haven’t they added “iPad” to the overhead navigation bar on their site? Will pre-orders hurt or help Apple?

We’ll find out soon I guess.

So far there an iPhone/iPod Touch version, a PC version, and a BlackBerry version, and it looks like at long last an Android version will join them. The Dell Mini 5 handheld, a sleek mini-tablet device running Android, will come with a Kindle app according to leaked promotional documents. The Mini 5, which sports a 5’ 800x480 screen and 3G capability is said to be headed to AT&T. Whether that’s good news remains to be seen. Given the network issues the data hungry iPhone has caused, another data hungry device may be the last thing AT&T needs. There’s no release date or pricing info available yet, but stay tuned to Gadgetell for the latest!

2010: Battle of the tablets

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers

It’s going to be an ugly and downright dirty battle in the personal computing arena. Computer manufacturers – Apple Inc., Hewlett Packard (HP), Dell, HTC, Fusion Garage etc. are going to pitch in around 50 types of tablet computers into the fighting pit. It will come in all shapes and sizes – Five inches, seven inches, nine inches, ten inches, dual screen, and anything that you can think of. This information is not a hoax and we kid you not. Our trusted source is from the company that is licensing its microprocessor technologies to all manufacturers – ARM.

This scenario is somewhat like when ASUS revealed their EeePC. Everything was going from portability to ultra-portability and soon other manufacturers followed suit in the netbook fad. It can follow you anywhere and everywhere. The manufacturers were and are still racing toward creating the ultimate tablet computer – more powerful, slimmer, and smaller.

With the announcement of Apple’s iPad, it is now going to be the public enemy number one. The first wave would be a sight to be seen for sure when all the other models – knockoffs, Android devices, and some others are going against it but not among themselves.

Better run to mommy as it is going to be brutal!

Sales documents leaked to Engadget show Verizon is prepping it’s staff to encourage customers to buy the WiFi only version instead and then pick up a MiFi and data plan It’s a savings of $130 for the customer and a sweet deal for Verizon. There’s one hitch though-Verizon’s data plan costs a hefty $60, $30 more than AT&T’s unlimited iPad only plan.

Of course that $30 AT&T data plan may not do much good in areas such as New York and San Francisco where the company’s data network is already overwhelmed by iPhone users. Adding equally data hungry iPads to the mix may end up being a recipe for disaster. If it were me, I’d go for the WiFi only version.

To begin with, this gets that notebook/netbook description because it falls right in the middle with a 12.1-inch WXGA (1,366 x 768) display.

But whether or not this is technically a netbook is not the issue because the U230 seems to be a capable little device.

Feature wise you can expect 2GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 8022.11 b/g/n, a 6-cell battery, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, built-in card reader and an ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics card. Additionally, the U230 comes sporting Windows 7 Home Premium.

In terms of the different models, they U230-033US comes with an AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 processor with a 250GB hard drive, and the U230-040US comes with an Athlon X2 L335 processor and a 320GB hard drive.

In terms of pricing, the U230-033US is up for $429.99 while the U230-040US is priced $50 higher at $479.99. Finally, both models of the MSI Wind12 U230 can be found with Newegg.

Adobe uses some quick stats: 85% of Alexa top 100 sites run Flash and 75% of all video on the web is Flash, to drive their message home. Emphasizing Flash and Adobe Air as the platform developers bring you their vision, Adobe makes the case for developers to keep on using Flash and how Adobe is going to help power the open innovation that these devices will bring. The future, Adobe suggests, is not closed.

For its part, the Slate looks very slick in the demos. Check out the two videos below.

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Laptops

So LG has this super skinny, super nice looking netbook, its the X300 and it is going to be available beginning later this month. Unfortunately this is one of those times that we here in the US are going to be a little disappointed because the LG X300 netbook is not headed here, at least not at first. Instead LG has chosen to release it in Asia and then the Middle East and South America.

Feature wise, to begin with the skinny part comes in regards to the 0.69-inch thickness. Otherwise the LG X300 netbook comes sporting an 11.6-inch display, 2.0GHz Intel Menlow processor, a 1.3-megapixel webcam and is running Windows 7 Home Premium. Other perks of the LG X300 include built-in 3G connectivity and that it can handle up to 2GB of RAM, up to a 128GB SSD and ships with a spare 2-cell battery. Yes, spare 2-cell battery. Finally, it weighs in at 2.14-pounds and will be available in either shiny white or light brown.

No word yet on pricing, of course March is not all that far away to wait, assuming you live in one of the areas that LG is planning to make the X300 available.

Entourage Edge sports two screens, one for eReader, one for Tablet

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Gadgets / Other, ebooks

The Entourage Edge is one intriguing little hybrid between an eReader and a tablet. It opens up like a book with 2 screens facing the user. There is a 1200 x 825 pixel 9.7-inch eInk screen on one side, and a 1024 x 600 pixel 10.1-inch color LCD on the other. It measures twice as thick as the Apple iPad, but it has 2 screens so that seems fair. It weighs in at 3 pounds, which is kind of heavy for a device that you are supposed to carry around like a book all day. The hinge has a 180° range of motion, which allows you to open it up and lay it flat on the table.

The eReader portion of this device boasts a Wacom enabled screen, where you can scribble annotations and notes on your ebooks. Page turns are at a miserable 3-5 seconds per turn, but that’s normal for an eReader. Battery life when using only the eReader is just over 16 hours.

The tablet runs on Android 1.6 (Donut) which has a Marvell Armada PXA168 processor (1.2 GHz but capped at 800 MHz by the software) and 512 MB of RAM with a resistive touchscreen. Several apps are included in the tablet, but you won’t have access to the Android Market for more apps. Entourage mentioned that they will implement their own marketplace in the future. One interesting app that is included in the tablet is DocumentsToGo, which allows you to view and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. It can even read PDF files, but you probably want to stick with the eReader for PDFs, unless you really need to see colors in your document. Battery life when using only the tablet is only at 6 hours.

Other specs include 2 USB ports, 1 mini USB port, a headphone and mic slot, WiFi 802.11 b/g, 4GB internal flash memory, an SD card slot and a SIM card slot. It doesn’t have 3G connectivity. It’s priced at $499, which is pretty cheap considering that it is both an eReader as well as a tablet.

“I am anxious to see the customer response and usage” the CEO said. He also let loose that he doesn’t expect a lot of network usage; he believes the lower-priced WiFi version will be the bigger winner. That’s a sizable gamble that AT&T got wrong with the iPhone, it consumes far more data than AT&T anticipated (or perhaps hoped for?).

As many of us grapple with the decision over going with the cheaper WiFi version or the 3G equipped, no contract version, one thing is clear: AT&T isn’t betting big on the iPad. Does that speak to an end of exclusivity or just a CEO tired of hearing about how the iPhone cripples his network in NYC and Frisco?

We’ve all seen those giant pressure sensitive Surface tables capable of recognizing objects that are placed on it and take appropriate actions such as downloading images off a camera or syncing a mobile phone. You can find these fun tables in hotels (like the Hard Rock in Vegas), and in stores (like AT&T retail shops). Now it looks like Microsoft is working on a way to remove the table while perserving the Surface experience.

Mary Jo Foley over at ZD Net found a Microsoft web page with these details:

“Our goal is to bring Microsoft Surface experience to mobile scenarios, and more importantly, to enable 3D interaction with mobile devices. We do research on how to transform any surface (e.g., a coffee table or a piece of paper) to Mobile Surface with a mobile device and a camera-projector system. Besides this, our work also includes how to get 3D object model in real-time, augmented reality and multiple-layer 3D information presentation.”

Unfortunately, the link is broken now but shows that Microsoft is paying attention to arguably it’s most exciting project in a long time. The Surface has always shown such promise and bringing that experience to any flat surface would be a compelling offering. We’ve seen attempts that promise almost hardware-free computers but the tech always seems distant. Perhaps Microsoft can be the one to shepherd this through to consumers.

I’ve been calling for a Surface Phone for years based on the chord that Microsoft hit with Surface. Maybe a tablet based on Surface wouldn’t be too bad either.

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Laptops, Wireless

<img src="http://admintell.napco.com/ee/images/uploads/gadgetell/126_smbnotebook_webready.jpg" title="" alt="HP's first multitouch tablet the 1240p"" width="300" height="205" align="right" />Today, HP unveiled their latest super-thin multitouch enabled convertible tablet. The polarizing tablet form factor (people seem to love it or hate it) has been a mainstay in the HP line with limited success. HP looks to tilt this product to the medical and sales arenas. The convertible tablet behaves both like a traditional laptop or swing the screen around and use the unit as a tablet.

The new 2740p tablet is HP’s first multitouch unit. This means users can pinch, double tap and swipe, just like iPhone users on the screen. Fingers can be used as an input device or a stylus pen. The screen measures 12.1” diagonally.

The 2740p isn’t just a pretty face, though its aluminum case it is that, it also meets the military spec for vibration, dust, humidity, altitude and high temperature. Tough, touch and good looking? Nice going, HP.

The website says the product is not yet avaialbe (coming soon!) and pricing has not yet been announced.

Apple’s iTunes music store is not the only way for iPod owners to purchase music, but iTunes remains the most popular outlet because of its built-in integration with the iPod. Apple will maintain a similar advantage when the iPad goes on sale this year. Though the iBook store will have a competitor in the Amazon Kindle App, Apple “stacks the deck against Amazon” according to the Business Insider.

Apple forbids companies from including in-app purchases unless they are willing to share 30% of the revenue with Apple. When Amazon attempted to include a direct method to order eBooks within its Kindle app, Apple told them to pay up or remove it. As a result, Amazon and other eBook retailers who target the iPad will have to make customers go to the web, log-in to Amazon, search to place an order, and then return to the Kindle app to sync the new content. It’s a minor inconvenience, but it’s one that the iBook store will not present.

Amazon’s recent tussle with publishers over pricing removed what would have been an advantage over Apple’s bookstore. Customers will naturally question why they should deal with the extra steps of Amazon purchases if they can pay the same price in the integrated experience built-in by Apple. The iTunes store accounts for much of the world’s digital media purchases, and the iPad will likely make Apple a major factor in the digital books market as well.

The last we heard in terms of the JooJoo was that it will “reach consumers at the end of February.” Well, that may have been said with good intentions but at the same time is was not entirely accurate because the latest in terms of the JooJoo is that it has been delayed. Yup, shocking, however those who were brave enough to place a pre-order will now be waiting until almost the end of March. Or more specifically, March 25.

FUSION GARAGE TO SHIP JOOJOO INTERNET TABLET ON MARCH 25

SINGAPORE—February 26, 2010—Earlier this month, Fusion Garage’s JooJoo Internet tablet went into full production with an anticipated on-time delivery to consumers at the end of February. Last week, the company became aware of a manufacturing issue involving JooJoo’s industry-first 12.1 inch capacitive touch screen which Fusion Garage was quickly able to diagnose and rectify. The company now forecasts the JooJoo will be sent to consumers on March 25.

The manufacturing issue centers on fine tuning the touch sensitivity of the capacitive screen. Fusion Garage will be providing all pre-order customers with a free JooJoo accessory to compensate for the delay in the delivery of their JooJoo.

Fusion Garage’s recent agreement with CSL, its manufacturing partner, has eliminated nearly all of the manufacturing costs associated with JooJoo. The company has no other barriers in the way of product delivery in the new timeframe.

The company apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the delay.

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Gadgets / Other, Household, Miscellaneous

To be a successful company, you need to be able to reach to a variety of customers. Computer companies do this by making different models based on the needs of its customers. Dell is the first major company that is taking this concept and applying it to their tablets. The idea was hinted at during the announcement of the Mini 5 concept at CES; but now it has been confirmed in a direct statement from the company’s tablet division head, Neeraj Choubey, that the Dell Mini 5 is only the first tablet in a series of them to come in different sizes in the near future.

The Dell Mini 5 is a 5-inch tablet that will be released sometime this spring. Though no price has been announced, Choubey stated that the price will be competitive. But there will be other tablets after in an assortment of sizes and functions. The Mini 5 is more like a mobile internet device (MID) while a bigger, 8-9 inch size tablet could be used for completely different functions such as an e-reader. Expect Dell to release one in direct competition with the iPad so they won’t get left in the dust like they did with the iPod. (Does anyone remember the Dell DJ?)

Dell has a great opportunity here and I hope they take it. As of now, the iPad is lacking a lot of things consumers desire; and if Dell can take advantage of that, they have a chance to take control of the tablet market-share right off the bat.

Yesterday we learned that Dynamism was soon going to begin selling the Viliv S10 Blade here in the US. In fact they have the S10 Blade listed as “available soon” in seven different configurations. But what they did not tell us was the pricing, well, aside from that it will be starting at $699. Thankfully though, that is what the Internet and leaks are for. The information comes by way of an enterprising UMPC Portal commenter who did some research with Froogle. Anyway, pricing is as follows.

$699 - 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530, 60GB hard drive, Windows XP Home

$797 - 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530, 32GB SSD, Windows 7 Home Premium

$889 - 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530, 32GB SSD, 3G, Windows 7 Home Premium

$857 - 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530, 64GB SSD, Windows 7 Home Premium

$949 - 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530, 64GB SSD, 3G, Windows 7 Home Premium

$987 - 2.0GHz Intel Atom Z550, 64GB SSD, Windows 7 Home Premium

$1,079 - 2.0GHz Intel Atom Z550, 64GB SSD, 3G, Windows 7 Home Premium

Of course, this should go without saying, but these prices are unofficial which means they could change.

What do you get when you put a smartphone’s innards into a netbook chassis? A Compaq Airlife 100, of course! Except that HP decided to call it a “smartbook”, which seems to suggest the smartphone-netbook hybrid nature of the Airlife 100. It is said to feature a Snapdragon processor (rumored), a 16GB SSD, 3G and WiFi connectivity, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. It even runs on an Android OS. HP also added that the battery has enough juice for up to 12 hours of continuous usage, and up to 10 days in standby mode! Scary, I know. My cellphone doesn’t even last that long on standby.

For now, it will be rolling out in the Europe and Latin America only. According to rumors, it may be placed under the HP Mini line of netbooks, which is quite a reasonable assumption, when it begins shipping in the US. No words on the price, though.

Although not in a rush to start churning out tablets any time soon, Sony is pretty content with the success of its ebook reader, the Reader Daily Edition. From the looks of it, they aren’t too worried of the iPad affecting sales of their ebook readers.

What sets the iPad apart is the elegant and seamless OS. Can Sony make one that’s on par with its rival? Oneda admits that they are lagging “a little” behind Apple, but given their track record, Sony is usually a year behind Apple in terms of handheld devices. There’s no official confirmation on when the Sony tablet might start appearing, though. If you’re looking for a spec sheet, well, there’s none. Sony’s just in the talks of making one, they haven’t actually designed or produced any prototypes. Will the upcoming Sony tablet be a spin-off of Sony Dash?

Yesterday we heard a few last minute details about the JooJoo, and now it looks like we have some confirmation in the form of an official press release. Basically, just to sum it up, the JooJoo tablet is going into full production and will be shipping soon.

According to the press release;

“Fusion Garage today announced that its category-creating JooJoo Internet tablet has moved into full production with initial shipments expected to reach consumers at the end of February.”

There you have it, the end of February. Well, at least for those that were brave enough to place a pre-order.

The good news here, is that the JooJoo tablet will support Flash at launch. Which for most will ultimately mean that the JooJoo will turn into nothing more than Hulu watching device.

Still a $499 tablet that offers support for Flash sounds like it could be an interesting device.

FUSION GARAGE MOVES INTO FULL PRODUCTION OF BREAKTHROUGH JOOJOO Tablet
Innovative Manufacturing Agreement and Investment from CSL Group Helps Reinvent Consumer Electronics Business Model

SINGAPORE, February 3, 2010 – Fusion Garage today announced that its category-creating JooJoo Internet tablet has moved into full production with initial shipments expected to reach consumers at the end of February. Helping fuel the JooJoo’s arrival and Fusion Garage’s next phase of corporate growth is an innovative manufacturing agreement and strategic investment from mobile device OEM and distribution giant CSL Group of Malaysia.

Fusion Garage is expected to announce a second round of investment within the next two weeks which would augment today’s investment from CSL and the company’s initial round secured in November 2009.
CSL, established in 1998, has rapidly grown to a major conglomerate, with sales of nearly $300M USD, and the organization is one of the largest manufacturers of cell phones, mobile devices, netbook and notebook computers in SE Asia.

The strategic relationship between the companies calls for CSL to absorb all up front manufacturing costs associated with JooJoo production. This agreement virtually eliminates the normal high cost of mass market entry – often in the tens of millions – for any emerging Consumer Electronics (CE) hardware developer. In exchange, CSL will receive a revenue royalty from each JooJoo sold globally. Additionally, CSL has made a strategic venture investment in Fusion Garage which will help the company to move to the next phase of its corporate growth and product development.

“This is landscape changing manufacturing agreement in the CE hardware market in much the same way Dell changed the PC business model with its direct to consumer sales approach back in the 1990s,” said Fusion Garage founder and CEO, Chandrasekar (Chandra) Rathakrishnan. “CSL’s confidence in JooJoo and strategic investment enables us to concentrate on the expansion of our organization, software development and, ultimately, building a world class CE company.”

“We are justifiably bullish – not only on the promise of the JooJoo and the Internet tablet market’s potential but also on Fusion Garage’s forward looking vision,” said Dato Eric Chuah, Chairman of the CSL Group of Companies. “We have an opportunity to expand our business via this relationship, enter a hot market with a trusted partner and turn the traditional CE hardware manufacturing model on its head. We are betting on volume here and firmly believe our bet will be a winner.”

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH900 has just been released in the US, for $999. It comes with a 5.6” multitouch display, features an Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHz processor, 2GB RAM, a 62GB SSD, GPS and it runs on Windows 7 Home Premium. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth. The LifeBook UH900 weighs at just a little over 1 lb, sporting a Lithium ion 2-cell polymer, 7.2V, 1800 mAh battery. No words on its battery life, though.

The US version of the LifeBook UH900 is slightly cheaper than its Japanese counterpart, which is priced at approximately $1100. The LifeBook UH900 is not exactly the cheapest UMPC in town, but with the $50 off and a $100 mail-in rebate, it brings down the price to $849. As part of this special offer, Fujitsu is also offering a free 160 GB Backup Ultra Portable Hard Drive, or a free Lexmark X2650 All-in-One Inkjet Printer, as well as free shipping.

Lin reportedly explained the while creating a tablet is child’s play for Acer, creating the ecosystem around it is Apple’s forte and is not easily repeated. Lin hinted other companies will try to duplicate the hardware, but will fall short in software. Therefore, Acer will focus on what it does best notebooks and ultra-thin notebooks.

Lin noted he expects the iPad not to draw sales away from his product line. He believes the iPad will draw from a very different customer base than those that seek Acer products. It will be interesting to see if Apple can convert netbook buyers or even notebook buyers into iPad buyers or if Lin is correct and they’ll pull from a different base.

Revealed during the call is manufacturing assistance by a phone manufacturer in southeast Asia. Though Fusion Garage refused to name the company, the move will reduce the high up-front costs of small run manufacturing in exchange for a royalty of each JooJoo sold. This should help keep the company stable throughout the launch cycle. Fusion Garage raised $3 million in first round funding and expects to announce a new round shortly.

When asked point blank about the JooJoo’s chances over the iPad, Fusion Garage CEO said, “t has a much larger screen, 12.1 inches instead of 9.7 inches. The resolution is 1368 by 768 pixels instead of 1024 by 768. There are an extra 300 pixels of length, so it’s 16:9 widescreen resolution instead of 4:3. Watching video on it is a joy. And the Web browsing experience is even better than the iPad, because of the size of the screen.”

JooJoo started as a partnership between Michael Arrington of TechCrunch and Fusion Garage. The relationship has since deteriorated with both partners bringing legal claims against the other. It is unclear if those claims will delay shipping to customers that have pre-ordered. The pre-orders reportedly have surprised Fusion Garage.

The JooJoo won’t have an app store according to the interview, believe that the web can provide much of the content brought about by these applications.

The iPad may be the hot topic at the moment, but I am sure that the iPad is far from the last tablet that we are going to be seeing this year. We already know that Google is planning to do something with Chrome OS and now we are being given what could be described as a first look. Below we have some images, along with a concept video which come courtesy of Google Chrome designer Glen Murphy. Keep in mind that the tablet shown here is likely just one of many (multiple) as we have already heard that Chrome OS will not be limited to just one device. Anyway, its an early look, but still an interesting video and set of images.

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware

With Apples success in the past, their will undoubtedly be copycats. Trying to recreate what Apple has done so well; reap their success. And I don’t think many have really succeeded; but the ExoPC Slate looks to fill some of the holes in the iPad’s spec sheet.

From the front, this Slate has the beauty of the iPad; it’s whats on the back and inside that gives Apple a run for their money. Flash support, the biggest complaint I’ve seen so far about the iPad, is present on the ExoPC Slate. So none of those pesky lego bricks in your web browsing experience.

Now lets get down and dirty with these specs and find what’s on the inside. Unlike the iPad, this Slate doesn’t just have an enlarged version of WiMo 6; it has a real computer operating system, Windows 7. And they also didn’t waste time making their own chip and put in a Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz one instead. Other specs include 2GB of DDR2 RAM and 32GB SSD with SDcard expansion.

Hardware-wise, they also beat the iPad in a few ways. Most notably, is the 1.3-megapixel webcam, the second biggest complaint I’ve seen about the iPad. But the 3 USB ports on the ExoPC Slate are what really make this tablet a home computer. Being able to transfer your documents through flash drives instead of through iTunes is a two thumbs-up from me.

For $599, you can get a 32GB iPad or the ExoPC Slate. I guess it all depends on what your looking for in a tablet. If you’re looking for a big-screen iTouch, than the iPad is your new best friend. But if you’re looking for an actual tablet PC, than ExoPC have something for you. Both products are available in March; but if you want an iffy prototype with a variation of materials and without multitouch, and are willing to pay more for it, you can get a prototype of the ExoPC Slate now.

Out in Davos, Switzerland, snow floats from the sky like every other day. But this particular day, someone special is treading through that snow; this day, CrunchGear managed to get a one-on-one with Dell’s CEO, Michael Dell, outside of the World Economic Forum. And what else would the CEO of Dell have in his hands but the new Dell Streak. Or is it the Mini 5? He gave them a run-through of the menus and a quick flash of the back of the device, but avoided all of their questions about the price.

Though he did confirm a few things that had only been rumored before, possibly unintentionally. First thing, previously known as Dell Streak, Mr. Dell calls it the Mini 5. And he does it with plenty of confidence in the name too. So it is safe to say that this will be the Dell Mini 5. On top of that he also states, quite a few times, that this thing will be out in a couple months.

Wow. Going from concept last month, to “hey here it comes” the next. I’m excited.

We have seen the price of the Dell Adamo drop in the past, most recently it was lowered by $500 which put it around the $1,500 price point. But that is not the case anymore as Dell has once again lowered the price, putting it a just under the $1,000 mark. And yes, by just under the $1,000 mark I do mean that it is priced at $999. But hey, that was another big price drop so for those that may have been holding out for a Dell Adamo but were scared away by the high price, now may be a good time to commit to purchase. That said, if you plan on making any upgrades you can expect to pay around the $1,799 price point.

As far as what you will get for your $999. Well that model is dubbed the Admire and comes with a 13.4-inch 16:9 HD WLED display, 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD, full-sized keyboard with back-lighting and is running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers

Well, leave it up to the western hemisphere to manage to get their hands on the new Dell Mini 5 tablet aka, the Dell Streak. A prototype surfaced on the Shenzhen black market this week and, in one case, is being sold for the equivalent of $1,098. Guarantee that that price is at least double what the retail price will be.

And the specs are the same as they were before: Android 1.6, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 5-inch 800x480 touchscreen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 3G. Not too big but should run pretty smoothly. What concerns me is the size. 5-inches is too large to really fit easily in your pocket but is too small to be anything more than a web browsing device. I don’t look forward to trying to use the on-screen keyboard on it either.

It’s things like this that make me wish I had access to a “black market.” Of course, legality issues would stop me from purchasing but you know, I like to window shop too. I don’t know, I guess it’s just the mystique of the thing that intrigues me. Oh well. I’ll just have to hope the Streak goes into US production.

Apple’s announcement of the iPad has created quite a stir. Many of us have had the time to reflect on how we might use or not use the new tablet. For a look at two opposing views, I asked our editor Robert Nelson to point/counterpoint with me.

Are you going to get one?

JG: I dont’ think I’ll be getting an iPad. The device is neither my smartphone nor a laptop I can bang out “work” on. I just don’t need an entertainment device that is bigger than my iPhone.
Robert: Am I going to get one? I am slightly upset that I cannot place my order, or even a pre-order yet.

The iPad is neither smartphone nor laptop. Debate.

JG: And that is the problem. Apple is really good at taking a popular existing product and making it remarkable. They’ve deviated this formula with Apple TV and now again with the iPad and it might suffer similar consequences. They are trying to find a third screen and beyond my smartphone, laptop and HDTV, I don’t need one.
Robert: And that is the reason I want one. I like my smartphone, both the HTC Hero and iPhone 3GS that I use, but there are times when I want to surf on something bigger and do not need or want to use a netbook or laptop. That is where the iPad will fit in. I do agree with JG though, this is not a case of Apple taking an existing product and making it better. Honestly this is not the most appealing tablet right now, but it has the apps.

Are we seeing the future of Mac computers?

JG: The only thing that makes sense to me, other than Apple is out to Kindle-bust, is this is how they see the future of computers. Forget the desktops/laptops, Apple could be creating computers that are on the go. The keyboard intro’d on day one starts to lead me toward that idea. Now maybe thats an idea that could stick, a tablet that is your primary home computer but we’ll need to see more peripherals and ports for that to happen, right?
Robert: I hope not. Personally I still use a desktop (iMac) for my primary computing needs. But at the same time could see this replacing my netbook or even a regular laptop, well it could replace them assuming at some point Apple will allow us to run multiple apps.

There was a lot of talk about Apple as a mobile company. Just how mobile is the tablet?

JG: I’ve got issues here. When I am mobile, 95% I am after specific answers, so I grab my phone and get it. When I am in my car and my kids ask for the 987th time, “are we there yet”, my iPhone gets handed back and serenity is restored. For plane trips, my phone (along with a battery backup case, like the one from Energizer) is pulled out for games and movies. It does all these things OK. Not amazing, like the iPad would but OK. Plus, I already have the smartphone with me that can do the job.
Robert: I think it will be mobile enough for my needs. As far as around the house use, the iPad will be lightweight and small enough to easily use, say, while lying in bed. As far as being on-the-go, I am certainly not going to be running around the store carrying an iPad like I would my iPhone, but at the same time it would be nice for my kids in the back seat, or my to distract my wife from my crazy driving. I could also see this being added to a gear bag in addition to my netbook, after all its only an extra 1.5 pounds. So, yes, I guess its mobile enough—at least for me.

No Flash means no Hulu

JG: Right now, there is no Flash on the iPad. Adobe seems steamed about it as they have been over the exclusion on the iPhone. Without Flash many of today’s sites, such as Hulu, means we can’t access them. As an entertainment device without Hulu is frustrating. Won’t the JooJoo have Flash?
Robert: Flash and Hulu, little loss for me. I would say that people put far more desire into getting Flash support than needed. Sure there are times when I would like to have it, such as when I am trying to follow a link to something, but those are rare for me. No offense to all the Hulu fans, but there are plenty of other ways I can entertain myself.

Summary
Just because Robert and I don’t agree doesn’t mean that the iPad will win or lose. We recognize that the product was only demo’d briefly and there are tons of things we don’t know about. Apple has a pretty good way of building enthusiasm before launch and we expect that will happen again. The question is, will it be enough to entice you.

Just recently MSI have announced plans to launch a tablet of their own. The details are still pretty light, but what we can tell you so far sounds good.

The tablet is going to be Tegra-based and is expected to be available later this year. Or a little more specifically, it was noted that it will be available in the second half of 2010. Price wise, MSI are hoping to have it right around the $500 level.

Other details include that it will have a 10-inch color touchscreen display, wireless support and be “light-weight and thin for mobility.” The good part here comes in another statement which came courtesy of MSI sales director Sambora Chen who noted that it will have “all the functions of a regular notebook.” Something we cannot say about the iPad.

“Boingo Wireless, the global leader in Wi-Fi, today announced that ASUS Eee PC netbooks will be pre-loaded with Boingo software, allowing ASUS users to easily locate and access more than 125,000 Boingo Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide.”

The Eee models will include the Eee PC 1005PE, 1008P, and 1201IN. And in addition to the software coming pre-installed those users will also be able to take advantage of special 50% savings on the first three months of a Boingo Unlimited account or the first month of a Boingo Global account.

Section: Apple, Audio, Portable Audio, Video, Portable Video, Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware, Netbooks

According to the big league media, Apple is really doing the tablet this time. After many rumored announcements, the swell behind this unannounced announcement is impressive. If the tablet is real, as virtually everyone would have us believe, the bigger question quickly becomes, “who’s radio will it have?”

Apple’s tablet would need to be connected. An always-on connection to the internet is a prerequisite for most netbooks, laptops and of course, smartphones. An Apple tablet that relies only on WiFi isn’t nearly as interesting.

Apple’s relationship with AT&T has been tight since the launch of the iPhone and Apple has gone to bat for AT&T over the 3G bruhaha, so maybe the love affair would continue. However, the analysts point to Verizon. From PHONE+

Analysts are saying that Verizon Wireless will be a 3G carrier for the device. Broadpoint AmTech analyst Brian Marshall is saying that unnamed sources have told him that it’s a “certainty” that Verizon will support the tablet. However, so will other carriers, he said – it will be a non-exclusive

.

The non-exclusive route seems to make the most sense. Apple would be able to point to Tablet sales with a Verizon radio to provide the carrot to carry the iPhone at a premium (the stick). PC/laptop/netbook are typically non-exclusives with limited subsidies - very different than the smartphone market.

What if Apple has coaxed AT&T to allow tethering on the iPhone for the event? By tethering to the iPhone, iPhone customer could avoid another mobile data bill each month simply by using the same connection they currently pay for. It would be an interesting alignment to get AT&T to step into the promised tethering world for the iPhone.

Will we see one tablet version with multiple radios or a customized tablet for each vendor? Will the vendor subsidize the tablet? How quickly will the price fall?

Assuming they are not just showing us the iPod touch with a camera, this is going to be an interesting event.

Cowon has recently announced that the product launch of the Cowon W2 Mobile Internet Device will take place in Korea on January 25th. The Cowon W2 is somewhat like a small tablet, it comes with a 4.8” LCD touch screen capable of displaying up to 1024x600 of resolution.

It runs on an Intel Atom 1.33 GHz processor with 1GB of RAM, 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR, and a TV-out slot. The Cowon W2 comes in 4 different versions, each varying in terms of its hard disk capacity, 60 GB, 80GB, 60GB Premium and 80GB Premium. It is still uncertain as to what “Premium” denotes, perhaps an SSD version of the hard disk? It will be sold in Korea for 599000 (approximately $534) to 739000 (approximately $659) Korean Won.

In some cases the overheating was severe enough to cause the external casing to show signs of melting.

The affected models are the Acer AS3410, AS3410T, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ and AS3810TZG. They were sold between June and October of last year. If you have one of the above models you can call 1-800-571-2237 for more information or go here and type in your unit’s serial number. Acer claims they are also sending out emails to affected customers.

European customers were notified back in October but the company has now decided to expand the recall to the U.S. as well.

MSI demoed a concept product called the Projector PC at the CES. It is a full featured PC that is combined with a projector capable of projecting up to 60 inches of full HD video. It is capable of directly projecting onto a screen or wall, and if used with an attachable stand, it can even project onto the ceiling, giving you a whole new level of movie experience. The mobility of this PC, combined with a HD-capable projector might just make this device a very popular entertainment station.

While the whole idea of a Projector PC is very tempting, bear in mind that it is just a concept product. It may or may not hit the shelves, depending on the decisions of the guys at MSI. I personally hope that this product will be given some consideration.
